The Moment Everything Changed

It wasn’t a bad job. Far from it.
In fact, I, someone who’d spent over a decade as a senior digital project manager in top UK and European agencies had it made.
Yet one day in 2024 it hit me. The role I thought was secure suddenly felt fragile. And that fragility triggered the wake-up call I couldn’t ignore.

I’d built campaigns for global brands, led multi-million-pound website builds, and enjoyed the respect and reward that came with the agency grind. When things were booming, everything seemed fine.

But then the contract roles slowed. The recruiters stopped calling. Clients paused. And by early 2025 I found myself watching colleagues, talented, ambitious people take junior roles just to stay afloat.

That was the moment I thought, I don’t just need a new job. I need a new direction.

In the quiet moments between deliverables I realised something important, I was no longer driven by “climb the ladder” or “earn the next title”.

I could do those roles. But I didn’t want them.

Because they were building someone else’s vision, not mine.

So I asked myself, ‘What if I built something I believe in, that I control?

Like many, I turned to the internet for an answer. Funnels. Affiliate links. Drop-shipping. Side-hustle gurus. AI shortcuts. And yes… chaos.

But everything I found felt off. If I didn’t believe in it, couldn’t explain it, I couldn’t teach it or stand behind it.

And then I realised: I already had the answer:

  • My deep experience in digital marketing.
  • My agency know-how.
  • My understanding of strategy, process and performance.

I just needed to repurpose it for a new chapter.

It happened quietly. A client pulled out at short notice. An internal restructure. A recruiter email that sounded too familiar.

I remember sitting in one of my usual agency meetings and feeling the walls closing in.

In that moment I said, I’m not doing this for someone else anymore.

And then I started building Dwayne Digital.

I didn’t want to shout from rooftops. I didn’t want to show my face on every post.

I wanted to build something real, valuable, and aligned with the thousands of professionals sitting exactly where I was, over-worked, undervalued, and ready for a change.

What I brought:

  • Years of leading complex digital programmes. I could scope, schedule, execute.
  • A clear understanding of how big brands succeed, Simplicity, clarity, people.
  • Discipline, rigour and the ability to meet expectations.

What I left behind:

  • Endless hustle for someone else’s agenda.
  • The belief that recognition had to equal value.
  • The idea that freedom came only with risk and chaos.

If you’re a professional aged 30–60, maybe you’re feeling it too:

  • The job feels safe… until it doesn’t.
  • You’re good at what you do…but not fulfilled.
  • You’re considering “something else” but afraid to start.

Here’s the truth. Your years in the industry weren’t wasted.

They were your training ground.

Whether it’s digital marketing, content creation or building a side income, you’ve already got the foundation.

If you’re ready to move from “thinking about change” to doing it, start simply:

  • Clarify your “why”What wakes you at 4 AM?
  • Inventory your skills — what you already know that translates.
  • Choose your first deliverable — maybe a blog, maybe a micro-service, maybe a digital product.
  • Build with momentum not perfection — small wins lead to big change.

The day I realised I didn’t want to climb the ladder anymore was the day a new ladder appeared, one I could build myself.

You might be standing at that moment today.
That’s ok.
You’re ready.
And you’re not alone.
